State not meeting commitment to community colleges

As president of the SUNY Orange Student Senate, I am writing regarding an issue that we believe has been ignored by all branches of government in New York. We are presenting this issue because it affects us not only as students, but it also essentially affects all persons living in the state.
It is important to make college attainable for all students today. Local community colleges have long been the most economical option available to state residents who want that higher education. With increasing tuition and fees it is becoming more and more difficult for the average person to afford the education that a local community college offers.
We now live in a society where education is the basis of training for the workforce, and it is important that we continue to make the opportunity possible for all residents who desire to obtain this education.
During the Fall 2007 Student Assembly Conference in Binghamton, members unanimously passed Resolution 10 of 2007-08 to renew the call for the governor, state Legislature and local governments to respect the laws of the state and fund community colleges at the level mandated by law.
State government has not been faithful in complying with the one-third agreement, also known as Education Law 6304, since 1975-76 when the governor and the Legislature gave the SUNY community colleges the full 40 percent mandated by the law. Last year, the state allocated only 25.37 percent of the costs to SUNY Orange from the 2006-07 budget, 14.63 percent less than the proper amount.
Millions of dollars have been withheld from SUNY Orange this past year alone. The effect has been an increase in tuition and fees.
An article printed in the Times Herald-Record ("College Support Lags") said, "Tuition and fees make New York's community colleges the fourth most expensive in the nation, costing more than the national average."
The Student Association of SUNY Orange is concerned that if underfunding is allowed to continue, higher education will become more difficult for the average resident to attain, thereby limiting the growth of our great state. The Student Association is looking for our state and local leaders to stand with us in asking the governor and state Legislature to invest in New York's future by funding local community colleges as mandated by state law.

At this moment officals in the NSA are looking to implement a "Real-Id" program, a nation wide id that will be required of everyone in the country. This program is spending billion that could be used for other failing institutions such as our Education System, our lack of nation health care, and a mutitude of other more reasonable and benificial programs that are decaying today. This "Id" will require all of us as citizens to fork out about $100 dollars to receive. A few states have begun to fight this "Real Id" situation, with many more to follow. Just think, all of your information will be put into a database shared by all the DMV's, in the country. On top of this, the card will be required to board a commercial plane, enter gov't buildings and so forth. This "Id" will also come with a scanable component used from retailers to airports. Another fantastic moment for those who cherish privacy and don't want to be followed around and checked up on by this Government. This new program will also make such things as identity theft, commonplace. Our voices can be heard by going to the Gov't website, but it is a long process to find where to write your comments. If help is needed the A.C.L.U.'s website will help in the proper steps needed to file a comment. I cherish my freedom as should all Americans, our rights were made to be upheld not be broken by those who are required to uphold them.

Community college tuition going up

Middletown – If you are a student at Orange County Community College, you are going to be paying more for tuition in the fall 2007 and spring 2008 semesters.

The college Board of Trustees Monday evening voted to increase tuition by $100 year from $3,000 to $3,100. Of the 30 community colleges in New York, tuition at OCCC is about midway in the range of charges, said college spokesman Vincent Cazzetta.

The board also approved a new fee schedule with some remaining the same while others will be increased.

I'm sure by now everyone is well aware of the situation our wounded Vets are facing at Walter Reed. It's so sad, it really is all about money...
How one can agree with the way Mr. Bush is handling things is beyond me.

Students are the future of America. We are so concerned about the very real need to get a job and make money, it seems no one has the time to think of global affairs until a war breaks out or we are terrorized upon our own soil. Are we more concerned with what film to see on Friday night?

Politics isn't a cool topic to discuss at the cafeteria lunch table. Maybe, just maybe, it's because politics requires you to think and then think some more. In any event, young adults are not being challenged to get involved in the political process or to be aware of issues that in some way or another affect the way they live their lives. 700 mile fence along the Mexican border

WASHINGTON — The Senate gave final approval late Friday to legislation authorizing the construction of 698 miles of double-layered fencing on the U.S.-Mexico border, shelving President Bush's vision of an overhaul of U.S. immigration laws in favor of a vast barrier.

The measure was pushed hard by House Republican leaders, who wanted legislation that would make good on their promises to get tough on illegal immigrants, despite warnings from critics that a multibillion-dollar fence would do little to address the underlying economic, social and law-enforcement problems, or to prevent others from slipping across the border.
The bill passed in the Senate 80 to 19, with 26 Democrats joining 54 Republicans in support. The only Republican voting against the bill was Lincoln Chaffee of Rhode Island. So far congress has approved $1.2 billion for the fence.

That figure, however, is only a down payment and falls far short of the $6 billion the fence is expected to cost. The border now has 83 miles of fences. Lawmakers from both parties conceded that, even at 698 miles, the new barriers would leave nearly 1,200 miles of border uncovered.

In addition to money for starting work on the fence, a Homeland Security bill passed Friday by both houses includes $380 million to hire 1,500 more Border Patrol agents and money to build detention facilities to hold 6,700 more illegal immigrants until they can be deported.
